Response to Kia

I think that you could get a job like you think Glenn, Austin, Cameron, and Anna can too. Having acting as a hobby would also be nice to get away from work and too have something fun to do. I think that you are a good actor and have improved a lot this summer by having a large role as Captain Shang.

Response to Chynah

Chynah, I think that you would make a great actress. You have a lot of emotional characteristics and the facial expressions you use with your character are outstanding. I think that you picked really good websites that tell the cold hard truth about acting. I think you have improved over the summer program.

Theatrical Career

http://www.afm.org/young-musicians
A theatrical career that appeals to me is being a theater musician. One way I could become a theater musician is By Joining the AFM. It is easy and very cost effective. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice involved in starting a career in music. I have to practice all the time and many times I have to sacrifice something fun because I have made this commitment. But, in the long run it will be worth it if I get a career in music. In this course we do not have live music so I have yet to experience this on stage. I look forward to that opportunity in the future.

La Boehme

La Boehme is an opera set in 4 acts written by Puccini. It is one of the most frequently performed operas. The story is set in Paris around 1830.
It focuses on the love between the seamstress called Mimì and the poet Rodolfo. They almost immediately fall in love with each other, but Rodolfo later wants to leave Mimì because of her flirtatious behavior. However, Mimì also happens to be mortally ill, and Rodolfo also feels guilt, since their life together likely had worsened her health even further. They reunite for a brief moment at the end before Mimì dies.

Response to Erin

I think your Hun costume is great. I like your wig and your ax. It suits your character very well. You do seem to do better when you have your costume on. I am really impressed with how well you know your lines, plus everybody else's.

Response to Marie

I was sort of mad too about wearing all those cloths under the hot lights. I never knew the hats from keep'em guessin were from the number one. I think your costume looks great. I think you have improved your character by being in costume. I know you'll just keep getting better and better.

Costumes

I think the costumes are great. They fit my characters very well. Being in costume and makeup will help alot. With my costume and makeup I will stay in character better. The only flaw is all the buttons on the emperors costume.

Make-up

http://www.freewebs.com/monsterfx/beautythebeast.htm this is a web resource that I found on the play Beauty and the Beast. This play relies alot on make-up to describe who the characters are and what they look like. I think they did an incredible job on their make-up. By looking at their play I realize we need quite a bit of make-up for Mulan Jr. I also learned about some special make-up elements that could be applied to our show. To make a person look old they used foam latex prosthetics and stipple around the eyes and whitened the hair. This might look good for my part as the emperor.

Production Elements

The performance of Peter Pan had to have all the right pieces to make the production happen. In my opinion the performance was overall a good performance. The costumes and makeup really enhanced the performance. I didn't like Captain Hook's make-up because he looked to old for the part.
In Mulan we have our characters, music and choreography almost done. We have not put together our costumes or make-up as of yet. Today we worked on lighting for the first time and it looked good. I do not see any real problem areas. If one of the elements was missing it would definitely take away from the performance.

Response to Kelly

I agree with what you wrote. I thought the fly system was going to be different also. I also agree that it didn't follow the movie as well as the book but I really enjoyed the play. Except I thought Tinker Bell's light should have been a laser point. I think you captured the play and its aspects well.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan was a very good play all around. I think all the acting and singing was very good. There wasn't anything really bad in it. Except I didn't like Tinker Bells light. The only thing I would have done differently if I were the director is to change Tinker Bell to be a laser ponter. I thought the technological aspects of the production were fairly well done. There is no connection to what I wrote because I wrote about gobos which were not used in the play Peter Pan.

Response to Larissa

I think your view of lighting is very unique. You emphasized lighting connects with the actors mood & feelings. It can effect your perception of the scene taking place if it wasn't there. I think that you did a through job on your description. You used resources that showed different concepts of lighting.

STOMP

I like the musical quality of the play STOMP and the way they use household objects to create music in their own way. STOMP is a high-energy, percussive symphony, coupled with dance, played entirely on unconventional instruments, such as garbage can lids, buckets, brooms and sticks. It is movement made original through the use of everyday objects in non-traditional ways. I really don't dislike that much about the play except that their is no dialogue or singing. There is no traditional Greek or Kabuki theatre in the performance,STOMP. How it can relate to our production of Mulan is through emotions and lots of energy.

Theatrical Technology

My source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gobo_(recording)

I have chosen Gobo (recording).
Gobo is a slang term used by sound recording engineers to refer to a movable acoustic isolation panel.

An acoustics gobo is parallel in use to a photography gobo, which is used to block direct light sources, and also shares its name with the stage lighting gobo. The origin of the term “gobo” is obscure, but is most likely short for “go-between.”

Gobo panels are used to control the acoustical properties of a room by absorbing and diffusing sound waves. Some possible uses include the treatment of recording and mixing areas for unwanted reverb, or to separate two or more musicians so they may play in the same room at the same time whilst being miced separately. Gobo panels are usually constructed with portability and storage in mind so that they may be stowed and retrieved at will, an advantage over more conventional acoustical room treatments.

A gobo is usually made from a wooden panel covered by foam, carpeting or other materials with sound damping properties. A gobo can either rest on the ground or be elevated by legs made from wood, plastic, or adjustable metal legs.

Yes this resource provides new and useful information because I never knew what it did before. No it does'nt contradict my own ideas about technology because I didn't have any ideas formed ahead of time. This technology can be applied by putting up Gobos in large rooms which people perform.

Response to Sarah

From your review of the play it sounded pretty cool. I wish I could have gone. It probably would have been my favorite play because of how much I enjoy music. I did some research on the play and the music was great. I just wish I could have been there.

Response to Kaley

I think the website you found is awesome. I think the gadgets in Kabuki theater make it alot more interesting. I also think that doing a play outdoors would be fun, but I still like Kabuki theater more. I like Kabuki theater better because there it is more musical. I enjoy the singing and acting more than a traditional play.

Kabuki or Greek??

Using my source of http://www.theatrehistory.com/ancient/greek.html , I found what Greek theater is. Greek theater, a from of acting that is mainly acting and moving. But Kabuki is more of music and the motions of dancing. The differences are what each one has in it. The Greek theater has more acting and where the characters react with each other and the audience. The kabuki style is more of singing and dancing thing. This one is better and catches more of the audiences attention than just plain acting. It also takes more talent to do singing and motions together. I like Kabuki style better because it has a lot of music and dancing compared to just a plain old acting part or play.

Kabuki

Theater has many different forms. Starting from the Roman times to the Kabuki to Shakespeare to now, things have changed and are still different with the country and its culture and people. Using http://www.kabuki21.com/ as a source, I found out that Kabuki is the style of the Asian people. It is a from of theater that uses a lot of music with string instruments, which I really like, and the actor not speaking but acting more. It is a very ancient form of theater and is still alive today. I think it seems kind of like what I thought it would be. It uses a lot of music with string instruments and drums. This is a lot like the Asian race with uses and references to music. I would sort of like to see a kabuki play in ancient Japan to see the differences in that and what we do. It would be fun and could change my thoughts on a few different things.

Response to Marie's Intro

I think that you have done alot of things marie. You are improving in singing too! You're singing out a lot more and that's good. I know you are going to keep on getting better. Don't worry about it! I hope that we can keep on being together in theater. It 's a lot of fun and I agree that it's a big part of our lives since we've technically been involved since before we were even born. I think it's a great experience for us. I know this is going to be a great show! I can't wait until its over. =)

Kia's Musical Theater Response

Kia I agree with what you wrote and I even think we had the same source. I like theater alot too but as a hobby. Its a great place for people to meet like you and my sister.lol But I like the site we used because it shows the different areas of theater and that's what makes it special and meaningful to people that do theater or want to do theater. Your resource was a good one and I think that we will all have alot of fun this summer. Good Luck!!

Mulan

The story of Fa Mulan is a true story except some things are changed. My source was http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art29756.asp. Instead of being in the Mind Dynasty for the Disney version, the real story was taken place in the Tang dynasty around 600 b.c. Also the name she used was different. She didn't say she was of the Fa family instead she went with her old family name of Li. But the most surprising thing of all wasn't that her name was different of that it was taken place farther back but that she wasn't cursed a heretic for being a woman and disguising herself as a man but that she was honored and revered for it entirely. This was surprising to me. I thought that women were not like that in the old days. But in the end the sources says that the same moral is there, men are just as affected by war as men are.

Musical Theater

Musical theater is a great hobby. I like it alot because it brings me out of my shell to be a more open person. I also like it because it is fun and you meet new people. My source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_theatre. It says alot about musical theater like the basics of the fly system to the basics of blocking and acting on stage. I think it would be a great start to all the actors that are in this production to read through it adn see what they already know and don't know so they can see what they need to work on. It explains the way a fly system works by drawing out a few diagrams and links it to youtube for an instructional video. The fly sytem isn't an easy thing for everyone to learn to use. It takes a lot of strength. The explaination on blocking and acting on stage talks about how we are supposed to be moving or "cheating" on stage all the time, as well as staying in character. This stuff we all should already know since Mrs.Laura alwayas tells us this.

Introduction

Hello everyone,
My name is Clark Farmer. I am 13 years old and go to Sebring Middle School. Next year I will be an 8th grader at my school. I play the guitar and will hopefully be in the Jazz band for my school. I also play for our church band. I also enjoy video games, from wii to the itouch simple games. I play soccer for the YMCA and will be playing next year as well. My expectations for this summer theater course is to get better at acting and singing in front of people. I think I will slowly improve at it. At auditions, I had alot of trouble singing louder to be heard, but I think that will come after time. I was really nervous too and didn't really want to try out for any bigger roles until Kia said he would if I would. My technical assignment is sort of confusing because I really don't know exactly what it is. I was on stage before this Summer Theater Institute as well. I was in A modern Christams Carol and Into the Woods as Cinderella's Father. Mulan, I think will be a better experience for me because I know what the entire story is about and I ahve a feel for the characters and music.
